Will Yahoo! Buy Digg?

Thursday, January 26, 2006

I've been hearing about the recent rumors that Yahoo is in talks with Digg to be bought out for a rumored $30 billion. However, the rumors were denied by Kevin Rose in a recent blog post saying:
So, just to set things straight - we are not in talks with Yahoo. We are focused on creating new features and expanding digg into new areas beyond tech. The recent reports about digg and Yahoo! are just rumors, nothing more.
Rumors point out that we could be seeing an announcement by both companies as early as next week. Of course, this could be blogs just stirring up trouble again. Nevertheless, if I were Kevin Rose, I'd be selling. I personally love Digg. I think it's the best place to find information relating to computers, science, and some really interesting stories.

Yahoo! recently bought Upcoming.org, Whereonearth, SearchFox, and Del.icio.us. They have a lot more other companies under their belt, but these all have to do with what is called "Web 2.0", a new wave of services that use AJAX to spice things up (usually). Yahoo! is clearly trying to buy all the new and innovative Web 2.0 companies; and that's great because Yahoo! can change them to make them even better. What we are seeing is Yahoo!'s true intent: rule RSS, rule the world.

Don't you think that the rumored price of 30 billion is enough to prove that this is nothing but people stirring the pot.

Even though Digg is a great service, there is no way that it deserves a 30 billion price tag! Try 30 million! And I'd still say thats high!

I think so also. However, Yahoo! might not be interested in just the technology, but the user-base. As you know, Digg has been getting millions of hits and it would be a good time for Yahoo! to attract users to their other services. Nevertheless, this is just a rumor!

I do hope that's not true.

Since Yahoo! got their sticky mitts on del.icio.us it's been down quite a lot - similar story with Flickr too.

This was just a rumor, and the rumor said that Yahoo! would buy Digg this week, and seeing as that hasn't happened, it was just a rumor.
